What To See In Darwen

A former Borough in its own right, Darwen has played many roles in the past and the future is still to be determined.  At one time it was the site of Bronze Age Settlements, the evidence of which can be seen in the Carnegie Library where the burial pots are on display. 

In more recent times the town has prospered as both a Mill Town and a Market Town combined.  Throughout the town there are reminders of the cotton industry, paper and paint industries and plastics through the remaining buildings and industrial features such as mill lodges and sluices on the River Darwen.  Perhaps the most impressive of the industrial remnants is the Grade II* listed India Mill chimney which dominates the skyline.  The impressive Market Hall still displays the skills of the stonemason in its embellishments, especially around the entrances, and market traders operate within its walls.  Whilst the outdoor market has now gone, the newly enhanced Market Square is a place to sit and meet folk for a coffee and cake in one of the many cafes.

There are a number of trails around the town with information leaflets which can be viewed and downloaded from the Blackburn with Darwen Council website.  These include the town centre trail (Blue Trail), the Industrial Heritage Trail and the Green Trail for those who have time to explore further.

Some of you may wish to come and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of one of the three Grade II listed Parks in the town whilst others may want to take advantage of the freedom of the moors and stop off at the Jubilee Tower which stands proud, overlooking the town.
